You know the saying; treat others how you would like to be treated? Well, that goes for your plants too! Scientists have recently studied if how you speak to your plants affects their growth and if plants respond to a female or male voice better.
There was a study done by Royal Horticultural Society that tested how plants would grow varying the difference between a male and a female speaking and reading from either a literary or scientific work. During the month long study, the same plants were given the same care regimen and same soil. Each plant was spoken to by either a male or female voice, as well as a plant with no sound as a control variable.
The plants that had been read to by female voices grew, on average, an inch taller by the end of the month than those that had been read to by male voices. The general winning plant had paid attention to Sarah Darwin, the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin. Her plant was about 2 inches taller than the others at the end of the month.
Now what does this mean? Is it the words women speak or is it the science of sound vibrations that come from their higher pitch tones than men? Research shows that speaking nicely to plants will support their growth, whereas yelling at them won’t. Rather than the meaning of words, however, this may have more to do with vibrations and volume. Plants react favorably to low levels of vibrations.
The Smithsonian and NASA have proven that mild vibrations do help in the growth of plants while harsher, tougher vibrations have a negative effect. The vibrations improve communication and photosynthesis which improves their growth and ability to fight infection. Which you could say, the plants are happy and healthy!
