At first glance, it may seem preposterous to start planning next year’s garden so soon, given the arrival of frost, snow and ice in the not-so-distant future. Sure, most plants are intended to be grown in a warmer time of the year, with more sunlight and less frost, however, many hearty variations of bulbs and vegetables like garlic are perfectly suitable to plant in early fall. In fact, many bulbs need a cold dormancy period in order to sprout brilliance in the spring anyways!
Take stock of your gardening supplies:
Much like planting in the spring, the best place to start your fall planting operation is in the garden shed, taking stock of all of the gardening supplies you have left over from spring/summer. From mulch to soil-compost mixes, you’ll need the right materials in order to successfully plant your fall garden. By knowing what you already have, it’ll be easier to make a list of the things you need before you head to the greenhouse.
To commit or not to commit:
Planting a garden is like maintaining a New Year’s Resolution for many. While you can easily maintain a resolution or garden for some time, life can easily get in the way of your plans. Before you commit to a fall gardening plan, make sure you have the time allotted in your busy daily schedule to keep up with your garden over time. With shorter days, longer nights, and cooler weather, you’re likely to spend less time outside than you would in the spring and summer. Think you’ve got the time? Keep on reading!
Do your research:
September to mid-November is the opportune time to get on top of your fall planting. Here at Jolly Lane Greenhouse, we love to plant a variety of Fall Bulbs and garlic in the fall. Grown beneath the Earth, these plants are able to thrive, without being affected by the colder conditions above the surface. For vegetables like garlic, it’s important to plant your garden two to four weeks before the ground freezes solid for the season. This way, your plants are able to get the sunlight they need and get a head start on top growth. But the preparation doesn’t stop there - you need to make sure you’re up-to-speed on the planting supplies necessary to ensure the greater success of your garden.
As you plant your fall garden, it is imperative to enrich your plants with nutrient-rich soil to aid in root growth. Once the surface freezes solid, your plants will rely on moisture and soil to assist them during their period of dormancy. Knowing the sunlight patterns in your planting space will also be helpful, as fall plants still require varied amounts of sunlight in order to grow and be harvested in the spring. Like the old saying goes: “Know before you go.” By doing your research, you’ll be better prepared for your trip to the greenhouse.

Using nutrient-rich soil and maintaining a proper watering schedule in the days and weeks after you plant your garden can make all the difference. Additionally, it is essential to cover your fall garden with a thick layer of organic mulch to aid in moisture conservation, as well as lessen the damaging effect of the ground freezing. With these precautions in place, your garden will be in great shape. As fall and winter run their course, it is important to keep an eye out on your garden and be patient with the natural growth cycle of the plants in your garden. Before you know it, spring will come again and you’ll be dazzled by the fruits of your labor.
