About
A Jolly Good Family Greenhouse
For five decades, the Sime family has provided locals with a variety of gardening, landscaping, and greenhouse supplies, as well as helpful tips for any level of gardener. While Jolly Lane Greenhouse is a thriving enterprise today, the family-owned business was founded on a whim.
Dean Sime was sick of work. He woke up each morning and dreaded going into the auto body shop where he worked. It was definitely time for a change — a big change.
"A greenhouse up the road from our house came up for sale, and Dean came home one day and told me he was buying the greenhouse," says Norma Sime, his wife.
"That was almost a divorce," Dean laughs.
The very same greenhouse is now part of the Jolly Lane Greenhouse, one of many greenhouses in the Sime's family-run business.
"No one knows why I started. I certainly didn't have a green thumb," Sime says.
But 50 years later, after a lot of hard work, a concerted family effort, and studying mistakes, the Jolly Lane Greenhouse has become Rapid City’s most beloved full-service garden center. The Sime's five children, Scott, Pam, Angie, Todd and Tim, have all shared a role in the expansion of the greenhouse operation, and built a reputation as the go-to gardeners in the Black Hills area.
Today, Jolly Lane Greenhouse is comprised of a production facility in Box Elder and the retail garden center in Rapid Valley. While the South Dakota greenhouse has greatly expanded throughout the years, its philosophy has remained the same: to produce a wide selection of healthy and hardy plants, with an emphasis on great customer service, while also giving back to the community that helped make this silly hunch a reality.
